Police Urge the Public to Stay Safe Online as Part of Safer Internet Day 2019
In support of this year’s Safer Internet Day, Warwickshire Police is urging the public to stay safe online and be Cyber Smart.
Taking place tomorrow (Tuesday, 5 February), Safer Internet Day intends to spark a national conversation about using online technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively while promoting the positive use of digital technology, particularly among young people.
Organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre, this year’s campaign seeks to empower people to take control of their online presence by exploring how the internet works, who owns the information shared on it, and how they can take ownership of their digital spaces.
Detective Inspector Emma Wright from the Economic Crime Unit at Warwickshire Police said: “Safer Internet Day is an excellent time to highlight the importance of staying safe online and encourage people to improve their knowledge and understanding of how to protect themselves in cyber space.
“When used safely and responsibly, the internet is a fantastic resource which brings huge benefits. However, it is important everyone is aware of the risks and the steps they should take to stay safe online.
“While children and young people are growing up in a world of constantly-evolving technology, with the internet playing a significant role in their learning, social lives and often their future careers, parents and carers can also play an important role in ensuring they are protected, while also staying safe themselves.
“They should be aware of what children are doing on the internet, the sites they are visiting, who they are talking to and ensuring they know there is an adult to talk to if they are concerned.
“There are some great, trusted online resources which offer advice about staying safe online, such as cybersafewarwickshire.com, thinkuknow.co.uk and getsafeonline.org.”
