Warwickshire Police ‘Close Pass Operation’ Raising Awareness for Horse Riders & Carraige Drivers on the Road

This week Warwickshire Police did their first ‘Close Pass Operation’, raising awareness of horse riders and carriage drivers on the road and the importance for motorists and cyclists to be aware of them on all roads, but especially country lanes.
The new Highway Code clearly states that you must slow down to 10mph, give 2 metres clearance and only pass when it is safe to do so.
It is also strongly recommended that riders and carriage drivers wear hi viz.
Huge thanks to Lynda and Murphy, Police Mounted Volunteer, who was accompanied by a police cyclist during the op and the local Safer Neighbourhood Officers from Rugby Police who worked with officers on the afternoon.
Around 45 motorists passed the horse and rider, with cyclist, on Smeaton Lane, with the majority passing slowly and with a safe distance. Four vehicles were pulled over and given words of advice, plus information from the The British Horse Society and Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership who worked with officers on this.
It was a very successful day with local stables pleased that they had raised the attention of the importance of road safety for horses in their area.
More ops planned around the county and horsey neigh……..bourhoods!
