Summer Weather Advice – Keep Your Property Secure

As the nice weather has at last arrived, we’d like to remind residents of simple crime prevention tips that are often forgotten in sunny weather but can also make you vulnerable to theft.

  • Always close and lock your doors and windows if you are not in the room, even if you’re just going into another part of your house or the garden, opportunists will look for open windows and doors to go in and take items.
  • Make sure any valuables are left out of sight in your house and shed.
  • Keep keys, money and bags away from the letterbox or cat flaps as thieves can hook valuables through small spaces.
  • Lock sheds and garages, preferably not using a lock that burglars could use a screwdriver to open.
  • Lock your bike inside a secure shed or garage, or to a robust fitting bolted to the ground or wall.
  • If out in the evening or overnight, shut curtains and use a timer to automatically turn lights on at night.
  • If you are going away don’t advertise that you are away from home on social media- this could tell a burglar that you’re not home.  See our website for tips to do if leaving your property for a period – www.warwickshireruralwatch.co.uk – Advice section.
  • We hope that everyone is able to enjoy the summer weather but would also like to remind the community to be aware that criminals are opportunist and may take advantage of open windows or unlocked sheds and garages.

Please be vigilant and don’t make it easy for a thief to take your hard-earned and valuable items by leaving windows and doors open unattended as we enjoy the good weather.
